"The Daily Rant"

With the whole Bowl season wearing thin on me and only a few NBA games on the tilt last night, I came across the #2 Memphis Tigers playing host to Siena. Yeah, I knew it would be a blow out, but I wanted to watch something different and try to get excited about college basketball. In the first minute, down 2-0, Memphis got out hustled by Siena for a couple lose balls. During a dead ball (after the first minute of play) Calipari took out all five of his starters and brought in 5 subs! Asked after the game why he did it....he said he didn't like their effort! You gotta love that in a coach to bench all five of his guys after the first minute of play.....why wait till they get down 10 and before you know it Siena believes they can beat you and then you really have problems. Great move Calipari, keep your players humble!

Tough loss in double OT for the Bulls last night....but I can't say enough about the effort of Joe Smith this year. The former #1 pick seems like he has finally figured it out after his 12th season in the league! Smith put up 31 points, 1 assist, 11 boards, 4 blocks and a steal! I thought the photo above was appropriate to remind Bulls fans would could have been this year....a nice trio of Ben Wallace, Joe Smith and LaMarcus Aldridge down low! This team would without a doubt be 10 games better at this point!

Martina Hingis:

This little cutie has been banned from tennis for two years due to testing positive for cocaine at Wimbledon last year! Are you serious? Why would she be doing that? Makes no sense......unless it has some kind of performance effect that I don't know about!

Now for the good stuff! Insideplays took the time to break down what the underdogs need to do to win this weekend. So in the name of the famous MC Hammer.....let's get it started!

Giants @ Tampa Bay

The Giants defense has played well all season and I don't think they will play any differently in this game. The Giants D will get pressure on Garcia and cause problems. Tampa bay will try to roll him out alot to keep him away from Oce Umenyiora and Michael Strahan. The difference in this game will be the Play of Eli (don't call me Peyton) Manning. If Eli can spend most of the game doing this:

And only a little bit of this:

And absolutely none of this:

Then they should be able to pull it out on the road.

Jacksonville @ Pittsburgh:
najeh.jpg

I have no doubt Big Ben will play well in this game, but the outcome will be based solely on two factors. Pittsburgh's run defense and Najeh Davenport. The Steelers must run the ball early to set up the play action passing that makes their passing game so effective. If Najeh is stuffed again and again, it will be a long day for Big Ben and the Steelers. Jacksonville's cockiness and success in week 15 may work against them. The Steelers have been hearing it from the media and their coaches for weeks how great the Jaguars are and how they were dominated and embarrassed on their home turf a few weeks ago. The Steelers chip on their shoulder won't mean anything though if the defense can't stop the "stretch' play and the halfback counter that has been killing them since their pro bowl defensive end Aaron Smith went down. If Fred Taylor and Jones Drew are able to bust through those gaps like the did in week 15, this game will be over by half time.

Tennessee @ San Diego:

I honestly think the Titans best shot is to start Kerry Collins in place of the injured Vince Young. He is a savvy veteran who won't make mistakes on the road in an hostile environment. Tennessee must run the ball and then run some more to keep L.T. off the field. This is their only shot to steal this game in San Diego.

portis.jpg

I know the Redskins are dogs in this one, but Seattle better not take the skins lightly. This team has been playing great football of late and will be ready to play. A nice dose of Portis with a mix of a rejuvenated Santana Moss, and the Skins can steal one in the great Northwest. The Seahawks must get back to the balanced attack that got them to the super bowl just two years ago to have success. If the stay one dimensional with Hasselback, Branch and Engram, the Skins defense will feast on these guys. Todd Collins just needs to manage the game and not make any mistakes...Portis and Moss will do the rest.

Game to watch tonight:

Detroit @ Toronto 7:00PM EST
